Day Trip: Bass, Burgers & Beer

(central region)

Day trip snap-shot: This will be a day of reeling in FL legendary bass and lifting glasses of hand crafted beer up and down. This is a great day for old friends to catch up or replace the beer with root beer and take the kiddos. No matter who you bring this is promised to be a full day soaked in old FL charm.

About: This true FL fish camp has been around for over 50 years. They have a stellar reputation for customer service and a fully equipped bait and tackle store with everything thing you need. You don’t even need a boat to catch big bass here since they have a stocked catch-n-release pond full of big bass. Highland also has guided fishing trips and boat rentals as well.

Address: 2640 W. Highland Park Road Deland, Fl 32720

Time: 7:00AM – 8:00 AM, bass feed better early in the morning

Activity: You can bring your own rod or they will let you use one of theirs. To fish in the pond is free and only requirement is that you buy shiners for them. Shiners are the only bait that can be used to fish in the bass pond and they cost around $18.00 per dozen.

Local Tip: Bring a chair to sit in, the side of the pond closest to the store seems to be the best spot. Make sure to check out the tackle store, its full of photos from a bygone era and treasure trove of Florida wildlife biology.

About: Enjoy over 75 ales on tap, craft beers, IPA’s , lagers and imported beers on tap, plus an extensive menu including of course great burgers cooked anyway you want them. Address: 105 West Indiana Ave, DeLand, FL 32720

Arrive: 12:00PM–1:00PM

Activity: Drink beer, reenact battle with bass and eat a burger.

Local Tip: They have great chili and try to score a table by the street for a great view for downtown Deland. Visit their website and learn some old school drinking slang before you visit them.

About: If you still want to explore Deland beer fare then walk down to the Persimmon Hollow Brewery Company and try some hand-crafted local beers in a great open atmosphere. Address: 111 W Georgia Ave DeLand, FL

Arrive: your call

Activity: Drink beer, laugh, tell fish stories, repeat
